Salt-Free Seasoning That Actually Tastes Good

You Asked for Salt-Free. Here's What We Built.

A few years back, some of our customers started asking the same question. Do you have anything without salt?

Not because they didn't love the flavor. Because their doctor told them to watch their sodium. Because their spouse was cooking heart-healthy. Because they wanted to keep grilling the way they always had — just without the salt.

We heard you. And we went to work.

The Problem with Most Salt-Free Seasonings

Most low-sodium seasonings taste like a compromise. You can tell something's missing. The flavor falls flat. You end up reaching for the salt shaker anyway, which defeats the whole point.

That wasn't good enough for us.

My dad's philosophy was simple: meat deserves to taste like itself. A good seasoning steps in quietly and brings out what's already there. That idea didn't change when we started working on a salt-free version. It just meant we had to work harder.

What We Built

Sandhill Ben's Salt-Free Original is the same Nebraska ranch family recipe — reformulated so people watching their sodium never have to give up flavor.

No added salt. No MSG. No shortcuts.

It took some doing. And we want to be upfront with you: unlike our Original blend, this formula is not all-natural. Creating real flavor without sodium required a salt substitute — and that means some ingredients that wouldn't appear in our original recipe. We made that tradeoff deliberately, because people watching their sodium deserve a seasoning that actually tastes like the real thing. We'd rather tell you that upfront than pretend otherwise.

That's just how we operate.

A Note on Storage

Here's something most salt-free seasoning brands don't tell you upfront: salt substitutes are naturally more sensitive to humidity than regular salt. That means virtually any salt-free seasoning — ours included — can harden if it's exposed to moisture or heat over time.

That's not a sign something went wrong. It's just the nature of how these formulas work.

If your seasoning hardens up, here's what to do: close the lid tight and give the jar a firm tap on the counter or use a toothpick to break it up. It seasons just as well either way — the flavor doesn't change.

Store it in a cool, dry place with the lid closed tight after each use. A cabinet away from the stove is ideal. Avoid storing it above the range or near the sink where steam can get to it.

What It's Good On

Rub it on a brisket. Sprinkle it on a ribeye. Season a burger before it hits the grill. It works on everything the Original does:

  • Beef — steaks, burgers, brisket, prime rib
  • Pork — chops, ribs, tenderloin
  • Chicken — grilled, baked, smoked
  • Vegetables — roasted Brussels sprouts, potatoes, whatever's on the grill

The flavor is there. The salt isn't.

A Note on Why We Made This

We didn't build a salt-free seasoning because it made good business sense. Honestly, it costs more to make than our regular line. We built it because our customers asked for it — and because the people who need a low-sodium option deserve something that doesn't taste like a consolation prize.

If that's you, this one's for you.
